Hip Hop (Hyper)masculinity and Battle Rapping: Challenges in Subversion
"The significance of battle rapping and freestyling in terms of masculinity lies within its role as foundational within hip hop. It is the primary mode of competition for rap artists – aside from record sales."

Fed releases 'secret' information | Marketplace From American Public Media
Wall Street
Big U.S. banks such as Wachovia and Morgan Stanley relied on the Fed for short-term loans of $6 billion and $1.25 billion, respectively, in the fall of 2008, the documents showed. So did some of the largest foreign banks — Barclay's borrowed $1 billion.
Most of the Fed's crisis-era lending — more than $3 trillion worth — came through those other programs. Fed documents showed that it had given trillions in emergency aid to U.S. and foreign banks as well as companies. The disclosures were required under the financial overhaul law enacted last year.
Arthur Wilmarth, a professor at George Washington University Law School, said the two-year gap foreseen in the law is "eminently reasonable," adding the disclosures are important to give the public a better idea of what happened during the crisis.
It is hard to draw conclusions about the impact that disclosure could have on banks' use of the Fed's traditional lending tool from data that's already available. But it looks as though when chances rise that disclosure could increase, the use of the discount window decreases.
After the Manhattan federal appeals court on March 19, 2010 upheld a lower court's decision granting the request by Bloomberg News and Fox News, discount-window borrowing accelerated its decline. Banks borrowed less than $10 billion in the week ending March 24, compared to $15 billion in the week ending March 10.

Call It a Reversible Coma, Not Sleep---Dr. Emery Neal Brown
Q. Why would someone like Michael Jackson take the anesthetic Propofol for insomnia?
A. I can only conjecture. But that incident is another reason why I think we need to be more precise describing what we do. If an anesthesiologist says, “We’re going to have you go to sleep,” some might think you could use these drugs for sleep. The bottom line is that when you’re undergoing anesthesia, you’re in a state akin to a coma. That always needs to be remembered.

Communicating with Elected Officials===Tips On Writing Congress
Communicating with Elected Officials | ||
To find your senators' and representative's phone numbers, you may use our searchable online congressional directory or call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202)224-3121 and ask for your senators' and/or representative's office. Remember that telephone calls are usually taken by a staff member, not the member of Congress. Ask to speak with the aide who handles the issue about which you wish to comment. After identifying yourself, tell the aide you would like to leave a brief message, such as: "Please tell Senator/Representative (Name) that I support/oppose (S.___/H.R.___)." You will also want to state reasons for your support or opposition to the bill. Ask for your senators' or representative's position on the bill. You may also request a written response to your telephone call. |

Tips On E-mailing Congress
Generally, the same guidelines apply as with writing letters to Congress. You may find and e-mail your senators and representative directly from this Web site
The letter is the most popular choice of communication with a congressional office. If you decide to write a letter, this list of helpful suggestions will improve the effectiveness of the letter:
- Your purpose for writing should be stated in the first paragraph of the letter. If your letter pertains to a specific piece of legislation, identify it accordingly, e.g., House bill: H. R. ____, Senate bill: S.____.
- Be courteous, to the point, and include key information, using examples to support your position.
- Address only one issue in each letter; and, if possible, keep the letter to one page.

According to a complaint unsealed on Thursday, Kruger took at least $1 million in bribe money from Lipsky, Malisky, Kalish, Rosen and Aquino.

Interview with Chris Rock, Putting On A Blue New 'Hat'--
It's a five-person ensemble show that deals with addiction, friendship and betrayal in New York City — not a frothy comedy, by any stretch.
"I'm a comedian," Rock says, leaning into the stereotype. "I don't know if studies have been done, but I would say 40 percent of comedians are in some form of recovery."
Or they're headed there, maybe?
"Or they're headed there," Rock agrees. "I mean, we work in bars, you know what I mean? They give us free drinks at a young age, and we kinda get hooked. I know a ton of guys in AA and NA — comedians are very addictive people."
Rock's philosophy: "Anything you can suck at should make you nervous. One should always be cognizant of how bad it could go."
True equality," the comic said in a video, "is the equality to suck like the white man. That's really Martin Luther King's dream coming true, is guys sucking."
"Here's what I knew about doing a play: I knew it would make me a better actor," he says. "In a weird way, it was like I was shoved into this great graduate school."

American civil rights: the Welsh connection | Art and design | The Guardian
When Reverend Andre Reynolds, minister of music at the 16th Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, looks out to the congregation for inspiration, he occasionally lifts his eyes over the pews, beyond the balcony and sets his gaze on the Wales window.
"I think it's wonderful that people halfway around the world should choose to affiliate with both the accomplishments and the disappointments of African Americans," he says. "It just reminds us that the world is smaller than we think, and that there are brothers and sisters somewhere else who thought about us."
Racist bombings were not extraordinary in Birmingham at that time. There had been more than 50 in the city during the civil rights era, all unsolved, earning it the nickname Bombingham among African Americans. And it was hardly a surprise that the assailants chose this church. Throughout the previous six months it had become the organising centre for the local civil rights movement, which had grown ever more strident.
Back in Birmingham, African Americans assumed nothing would be done.Four men, who formed a splinter group from the Klan, called the Cahaba Boys, were identified as complicit in the bombing. It was 14 years before Robert Chambliss, a Klan member, was brought to justice: it would take 37 years before another, Thomas Blanton, was put behind bars. Bobby Frank Cherry was jailed for life in 2002. Another man died before charges were brought.
