Audioboo Because sound is social.

Audioboo

We’re a small team based in London UK who launched Audioboo in March 2009 as a simple way of recording audio while on the move and adding as much useful data to it as possible, such as photos, tags and location.

We believe spoken word audio has been left behind in the current explosion of online innovation and we’re going to make sure that’s not the case in the future. Enjoy the service – we certainly do.

African Heritage in Classical Music

Here you will meet 52 composers, conductors and instrumental performers - Africans, African Americans and Afro-Europeans. Many are alive today, but one lived 500 years ago! These artists are unknown to most of us, yet are so numerous this site can present only a fraction of them. They have made enduring contributions to Classical Music. Several have composed, conducted and performed Classical Music. Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) of Guadeloupe is one of those multi-talented musicians. Cuban classical guitarist Leo Brouwer (b. 1939) is another. Over 100 sound samples can be heard at the Audio page and at the biographical pages. The links at left lead to a Black History Quiz covering everyone profiled at the site and a Guest Book in which you are invited to leave your comments.

American Experience presents "Panama Canal"American Experience presents "Panama Canal"New Film Documents the Human Drama behind the Creation of One of the Wonders of the Modern World

10.29.2010– On August 15th, 1914, the Panama Canal opened, connecting the world’s two largest oceans and signaling America’s emergence as a global superpower. American ingenuity and innovation had succeeded where, just a few years earlier, the French had failed disastrously. But the U.S. paid a price for victory: more than a decade of ceaseless, grinding toil, an outlay of more than 350 million dollars -- the largest single federal expenditure in history to that time -- and the loss of more than 5,000 lives. Along the way, Central America witnessed the brazen overthrow of a sovereign government, the influx of over 55,000 workers from around the globe, the removal of hundreds of millions of tons of earth, and engineering innovation on an unprecedented scale

This is where the misconceptions stop. This is where bias comes to an end. This is where we change lives. Because this is where we Bring Change 2 Mind.

Nature Iraq

The Revival of an Ancient Technique in the Marshlands of Iraq

Iraq Marshes

Azzam Alwash used to accompany his father, a government water engineer, on trips into the marshes, trips which infused him with a love of this "magical waterworld". After the fall of Saddam Hussein, Azzam returned to Iraq to help restore the marshes. To that end he established Nature Iraq, an organisation dedicated to the protection and restoration of Iraq's natural heritage.

It's the largest and most ambitious habitat recreation project ever known: to bring back to life one of the world's greatest marshlands. And it's happening in Iraq.
Considered to be the original Garden of Eden, the marshes were once Iraq's wildlife jewel, where man and nature thrived for 5,000 years. But in the 1990s, Saddam Hussein drained these gigantic wetlands and turned them into a desert, destroying a home to thousands of people and millions of birds

Encourage environmental awareness and stewardship of Iraq’s environment by promoting community-based environmental centers and clubs, developing environmental education programs in Iraq, and maintaining global awareness of Iraq’s environment.

Promote the sustainable use of Iraq’s environment and resources, respect and balance the traditional use of the environment by indigenous inhabitants, preserve wildlife and biodiversity, and address the economic needs of both local inhabitants and the nation.

Coal River Wind

Coal River Wind

In 2007 a wind potential study was commissioned to see if there was the potential to place wind turbines on Coal River Mountain. The wind potential study and the following economic study found that it is possible to place 328 MW of wind energy on Coal River Mountain. That’s enough to power 70,000 West Virginia Homes and provide permanent jobs and $1.7 million in taxes to the county every year.

Coal River Mountain Watch
Mountaintop removal involves blasting up to 800 vertical feet of mountain apart with millions of tons of explosives and dumping the loose rock into the adjacent valley creating a valley fill. These valley fills cover up headwater streams, a major source of drinking water in the United States. The chemicals in the loose rock, previously locked underground, are leached into water systems, and can create a toxic environment for local residents and wildlife. This picture is of an enormous valley fill near Coal River Mountain.

STREETSMART4kids - Dine Out and Donate

STREETSMART4kids - Dine Out and Donate

STREETSMART4kids™ raises funds to support local programs that help give homeless youth in San Francisco another chance at life off the streets. Each year, the organization partners with select San Francisco restaurants for Dine Out and Donate, a six-week long program that gives diners the opportunity to make a donation upon payment of their restaurant bills.

Originally STREETSMARTUSA, STREETSMART4kids replicated the STREETSMART fundraising program that was introduced in London by William Sieghart, Chairman of Forward Publishing Co., and Mary Lou Sturridge, Director of the Groucho Club. Their aim was to transform the good cheer exhibited by holiday diners during the months of November and December into positive action by asking restaurant patrons to add a voluntary £1.00 donation to their bill to support charities for the homeless.

LA's Homicide Rate Lowest In Four Decades

LA's Homicide Rate Lowest In Four Decades

Larumbe's 15-year-old daughter Griselda says they don't hear as much gunfire or see as much gang graffiti as they used to. "Before, there used to be lots more gangsters," she says. "They're not doing much damage anymore." Jesus notes that the gang members don't even look the same as before.
"You don't see those people with their pants down to there," he says, pointing to his knees. "They now wear skinny jeans."

But the crime decline is not just a new fashion trend. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced there were 297 homicides in Los Angeles last year, a huge drop from the more than 1,000 slayings in 1992, the height of a massive drug epidemic.

Criminologists have various theories on the decrease of homicides, from changes in demographics to economic factors. But experts can only speculate, and they can't predict if the downward trend will continue. Copyright 2011 National Public Radio. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/

Kleiman says that's calmed down because "a lot of the people who would be committing murder in L.A. are dead, and the rest are doing life in prison."
